Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a name given to a chronic functional problem where the patient suffers from weight gain, infertility, abnormal hair growth, and abnormal menstrual cycles for no apparent reason. It is often associated with fatigue, irritable bowl syndrome, hormonal imbalances, and mood disturbances.
PCOS is almost always multi-factorial. However, these patients almost always have elevated testosterone and estrogen levels. They often also have increased insulin levels.
Symptomatic treatment is almost always unsuccessful. Only finding and treating the root cause of the problem will lead to a successful outcome.
Patients that suffer from PCOS must pay very close attention to their diets. Many of these patients are overindulging in sweets and starches as well as fried foods and foods that contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)
